SOUTHERN PACIFIC 4-6-0, ELECTRIC
ACL

Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge Number 8 and 9 were two of the last three remaining steam locomotives that worked the SP’s narrow gauge in western Nevada and Eastern California. These two locomotives were acquired from the Nevada California & Oregon Rail road in the late 1920’s. The two engines were different from one another in details such as cab placement, dome placement running boards and piping details! Both had the distinctive whale back tenders. These were fairly heavy modern narrow gauge engines. They had cylinders with 16” bore and a 20” stroke. The drivers were 44” diameter, and the engines weighed aprrox. 87,000 lbs.. Many excursions were run for the rail fans through the 1950’s. Both the 8 and the 9 were extensively photographed in their last years of operation! There are still many people around today that still fondly remember riding the SP narrow gauge!
